Duff worked with a number of famous singers and songwriters. She teamed upwards with British singer Ed Sheeran for the track "Tattoo" and with Tove Lo for the single "Sparks", apart from working with Matthew Koma for the title track among others. She too teamed up with beau long time collaborator Kara DioGuardi for the track "Rebel Hearts". Duff promoted Breathe In. Breathe Out. only by appearances on television talk-shows and through radio interviews, as she confirmed in 2016 that she would not be touring in support of the album despite her previously stated plans. It is also her sole release under RCA Records.[iii]

Groundwork and production [edit]

Duff told MTV News at the Total Request Live finale on Nov 16, 2008, that she would begin working on her fifth studio album in "ii weeks". When asked nearly how the new music would sound, Duff said: "I like so many dissimilar kinds of music. Something poppy and catchy — I'one thousand girly merely I call up I'm kind of tough, and so peradventure a little rock influence." The plan however never materialized, and Duff went on a long hiatus from music.[4]

This Heart [edit]

Duff announced that she was recording new material in January 2012 with musicians like Jason Evigan and Ali Tamposi, during her pregnancy[5] and once more in September 2013 well-nigh notably with Billy Mann.[6] Early on recording sessions for the album consisted of EDM tracks that were later scrapped in favor of songs with a folk-pop feel because Duff felt that "information technology wasn't the push that I wanted to accept out there."[vii] Later sessions resulted in the singles "Chasing the Sun" and "All Virtually You', both heavily influenced past the folk-pop and audio-visual pop genre Duff was aiming for.[seven] By Oct 2014, she had recorded numerous tracks in which the titles made information technology online through social media[8] Sometime in 2015, pictures from the scrapped folk-pop album's photoshoot leaked online via Twitter.[9]

In Feb 2015, Duff once again decided to accept the album in a unlike direction and began working in Sweden with Christian "Bloodshy" Karlsson and Tove Lo on new dance-oriented tracks for the album.[ten] [11] Duff remarked that she "really wanted some of those super strong pop songs that Sweden actually seems to take their finger on right now."[2] Some of the folk-influenced tracks originally intended for the album before the change in direction, such every bit "Tattoo", "Brave Center", and "Picture This" managed to go far on to the album despite the modify.[2] "Chasing the Sun" and "All Nigh You" later appeared as bonus tracks on the Fanjoy edition Japanese edition of the album.[12]

Duff has described the change in the anthology's musical direction in an interview with MTV in 2015, citing "The album is a range of stuff. I would say definitely in the beginning when I started writing, it was pretty heavy, coming out of my past twelvemonth of – life. Information technology's changed since then, which is skilful considering I recollect that the overall theme likewise – me, personally, I'1000 not this super heavy girl. Yous know? I'm one for the sunshine, so it's shifted a lot and it feels a lot better to me." From the interview, it was also mentioned that a rail titled "This Heart' which was almost her son, was going to be on the anthology and was besides speculated as the championship. The track however never made the final cutting.[13] Duff has said regarding the album'due south lyrical content, "I definitely desire people to feel like they're getting a glimpse into my life and what I'k fabricated of. I am a normal daughter who has had a not-and so-normal life. I experience like my fans have stuck with me because they tin can relate to me and I desire them to. I want them to feel like we could become out and have a fun night together. I want them to know that my heart has been broken, but it's not the end of the world. Life goes on. I desire them to experience like I'k in that location for them. I want them to feel happy. And I want them to know that I intendance and that I accept cared about them all this fourth dimension."[14]

In 2019, a SoundCloud account by the name of HilaryLeaks uploaded the original demo's and early on recordings from the 2014 album when it was still going to be a "Folk-Pop" album named This Eye.[15] [sixteen]

Release and title [edit]

In July 2014, Duff announced that she had signed a recording contract with Sony Music Entertainment's RCA Records,[17] and that she would end and release her then-untitled fifth studio anthology in between filming of her new television show, Younger. She planned to exercise a trivial fleck of promotion for the anthology during this menstruation, just revealed that she would non brainstorm a "full press push" until filming of the show wrapped on Dec 12.[7] Duff announced in tardily August that the album would not exist released in October every bit originally planned and that fans would take to wait a "few more than months" for it to be released.[eighteen]

Duff announced the title of the album and revealed its cover artwork on May thirteen, 2015. Prior to the release of the championship and artwork, Duff announced that fans would accept the opportunity to pre-order the album and take their proper noun printed in a special edition of the album'due south booklet.[19] She mailed several fans who had been among the get-go to pre-gild the album white balloons that have the album artwork printed on it. The packages they received besides included a handwritten note from Duff nigh the album.[xx] A few of the fans tweeted virtually the packages that they had received, and a rep for Duff confirmed that they were official.[21]

Exhale In. Exhale Out. is named after a vocal that she recorded with Matthew Koma, which according to Duff, "stuck with [her]" throughout the recording process of the album. She further explained: "Over the past few years of my life information technology's just been something that actually helped me—just taking a deep breath in and letting a deep jiff out. It can be a adept matter, it can exist a struggle, information technology tin can be a power matter—it's just a proficient reminder for everyone to remember to do that. It's a relief."[22]

Limerick [edit]

In an interview with MTV, Duff described the Tove Lo-penned track "One in a Million" as a "'f-- y'all' anthem about a guy who's not treating y'all right". She as well said that "Tattoo", written past Ed Sheeran is "a beautiful song nigh a relationship ending and what it leaves backside." Both songs were admitted every bit Duff's favourite and most emotional tracks respectively from this album.[23] "Brave Heart" is an uplifting song nearly finding the backbone to allow go of someone even when y'all're scared of what's to come up. "I had been on my own for about four months and it's difficult, but I also found a lot of strength and realized that I could handle information technology," she says. "Information technology's a song most being set to move on, whether it's with a partner or a friend. Y'all have to be brave in a relationship."

Despite the emotionalism on Breathe In. Breathe Out., the mood is never downbeat, something Duff took intendance to ensure. "There are several songs from when I kickoff started writing that aren't on the album considering I wanted it to exist a experience-good record for my fans," she says. "I'one thousand such a happy person and so grateful for the life that I have and the pause I got to accept to alive a quieter life and have some of these experiences."

"Picture This" is a sexy song about being obsessed with someone you have concrete chemistry with only knowing it's non meant to last forever.[14] The album's last rail, "Dark Similar This", is a duet with former Big Time Rush member Kendall Schmidt. Duff wrote the song and described it was about "being stuck in a cab in New York with someone".[24]

The track "Belong" which appears on the Deluxe version of the anthology is co-written by Toby Gad. "There's a vocal called 'Vest' [on the album] that I actually love. It sounds cheesy when I talk about information technology, but information technology's not cheesy at all, and it's more about simply like not waiting for anything. Only going for it and not holding back," Duff said in an interview.[25]

Prior to the Sweden recording sessions, Duff has recorded numerous folk-popular tracks, some of which she has spoken of during interviews. Among them is a rail titled "If I Fall" which Duff has described as "about me taking a pace dorsum and kind of shutting downward my whole business, and anybody non believing in me and me being really scared to exist lonely after I'd been surrounded past 100 people for five years of my life." The song never fabricated the last cutting.[26] She too said, "And then the other ones are similar, some party songs, a song most [my son] Luca, a song about my separation and my love for this person that mayhap we're not meant to be together, or maybe we are. I hateful, it's very, very personal, merely I would say that it has a happy spirit to it, which is me."

Promotion [edit]

According to Duff, she was disappointed that she never got a adventure to "properly promote" the singles "Chasing the Sun" and "All About You", but that their releases gave her "a trivial taste of it over again" after "being out of the music game for vii years".[27] "It's just a balancing act of trying to take two careers that take up a lot of my time. And likewise beingness a mom – the about important one for me", Duff said.[27]

During the week of Exhale In. Breathe Out. 's release, Duff fabricated appearances on Good Morning America, Live! with Kelly and Michael and The View.[21] On June 16, 2015, Duff conducted a Q&A on Twitter through iHeartRadio's account answering fans' questions most her music and touring. One of the questions asked Duff if she would be going on tour to which she replied, "I don't take whatsoever dates set, information technology will have to exist subsequently I film the second season of the show!"[28] Duff was scheduled to perform at a number of events in 2015, even so, many of these were cancelled.[29] Duff had cancelled a scheduled performance in the Macy'due south Thanksgiving Parade the year before.[30]
